"The CNY Auction History"

The Central New York Auto Auction was started in 1954 by Irving Mondore. A former dairy farmer and used car salesman, Mondore built the business (then known as the Syracuse Auto Auction) into one of the nation's most successful auctions.

  CNY's Recent History
James Damiano started in the auto business as a sales person at a new car dealership in 1986. From there he worked his way into sales management, and subsequently to wholesale management in 1991. It was at this time that Jim was first introduced to the auto auction business.

Shortly after this, Jim opened his own wholesale company, Damiano Motors LTD. After a successful run at the wholesale business, and continued exposure to auto auctions, an opportunity arose that he couldn't pass up. In 1997, Jim and his partner Robert Ryan purchased the ailing Syracuse Auto Auction with the vision of restoring it to the prominence it once enjoyed. Changing the name to CNY Auto Auction to better indentify it with its central location, the hard work soon began

After vast improvements in the business Jim took over as sole owner in 2001. With Jim's philosophy of "realizing your growth" the auction has recently undergone its biggest transformation in its fifty-year history. In April 2004 the completely new "Doc's Diner" was opened. The new cafeteria, named after Jim's late father Dr. Richard Damiano is decked out in 50's décor to convey the history of the auction..

August 2004 brought about the completion of a brand new state of the art auction facility. Built adjacent to the original building, the new 8000 square foot "lanes" equipped with a new computer system, arbitration office and payment office, make CNY an "all new" facility with an emphasis on personal service. Jim invites you to come see CNY Auto Auction. The auction that you might remember is now the auction you can't forget!
  Origins of CNY
Similar to other auctions, CNY went through the evolution of growing-up and outgrowing its original facilities. The turning point came in 1962, when Mondore changed the auction to an evening sale. The change was met with immediate success, as crowds attending the twilite activity immediately doubled in size.
1966 CNY Market Report
With the influx of buyers and consignments, construction was needed for a complex that would more adequately address the needs of a growing business. The result was a multi-lane, modern facility complete with a cafeteria, lounge and lobby, executive, clerical and registration offices.

Dealers from a large area started coming to Syracuse, in order to take part in CNY's increasingly strong auctions. Success was credited in large part to CNY's change to a night sale, but Mondore's emphasis on providing superior customer service (with indifference to dealer size) earned CNY the reputation of "The Balanced Auction."
The CNY Auto Auction story is a tribute to Irving Mondore. In addition to developing the premier auto auction in upstate New York, Mondore was also instrumental in the development of the Eastern Auction Association (serving as the group's first secretary-treasurer). Today, the exceptional staff at CNY are committed to upholding the enterprising traditions started by our founder - more than fifty years ago.
